If you are new to the world of gold investing, you may wonder what the difference is between the South African Krugerrand and the American Gold Eagle gold coins. The coins have many similarities between them, but there are a few differences between the two that affect how they are valued in the gold market. In particular, you may have noticed already that these two gold coins are often offered at slightly different prices. The reason for this price difference will be covered in a minute, but before we get there, let’s have a look at some of the attributes of these coins.

The South African Mint began producing their gold coin in 1967. In doing so, South Africa became the first country to offer a gold coin that contained exactly one troy ounce of gold. Now, you should know that the physical weight of a Krugerrand is 1.0909 troy ounces total, of which one troy ounce is pure gold. The remainder is a copper alloy that makes the coin more durable, and this also gives it its reddish hue.

These coins became popular across the globe. Not surprisingly, other countries saw the coins’s popularity and rushed to follow suit by issuing their own one-ounce gold coins. Canada jumped into the game in 1979, and Austria soon followed in 1981. The United States didn’t join the party until 1986.

The American coin adopted many of the same aspects as the South African coin, with nearly identical physical properties such as thickness and diameter. boca raton web design . Also, the American coin also weighs in at 1.0909 troy ounces in total, of which exactly one troy ounce is pure gold. The one primary difference is that the Gold Eagle uses a silver and copper alloy to make it more durable, which makes it seem shinier than the red-hued South African coin.

Now, about that difference in price. Many gold coins, including these two, often trade at a premium (higher price) to the regular spot price of gold. Generally, this premium is due to the production costs that went into creating the coin, such as distribution, fabrication, and mining costs.

Following its 1967 introduction, Krugerrands often carried a premium over the spot gold price because of its popularity. But things quickly changed in 1985, when the United States and a number of other countries banned their importation in protest to the South African government and its apartheid policy. This prompted the coin’s popularity, and therefore its demand in the market, to fall off a cliff, so to speak. Reversing its previous trend, they actually traded for less than the spot gold price for a while.

Nowadays, they have recovered substantially in terms of market strength, but not to the extent before the import ban. So Krugerrands now carry a premium over the spot price of gold, but the premium carried by the Gold Eagle is still at a higher level.

So to conclude, the Krugerrand and the American Gold Eagle share a number of similarities, like the fact that each coin contains precisely one troy ounce of pure gold. Even so, as a result of market-related factors, the American coin now trades at a slight premium to the South African coin.

Gold coins are once again gaining in popularity, and two of the most popular coins are American Gold Eagles and Krugerrands.

Many investors over the past have realized that coin collecting is not only a hobby for collectors, but a true investment opportunity. Through the intrinsic values as well as silver coin values, it is a true investment as well as hobby. Many families have coin collections which have been passed down for many generations. One of the leading areas is Canadian silver coins as well as American coins and other numismatic items.

Many collectors as well as investors have realized that Canadian silver coins are a worthy collectible, mainly due to appreciation value that silver coin prices have been boosted too. Silver coin values have increased incredibly. The hobby of gold and silver coin collection is an industry within itself. Currently the market worldwide is worth approximately $100 billion dollars, however within the United States the value in this industry is around $10 billion. The reasons are not far to seek.

Silver coin values have been consistently increasing in value over the past months, and it is not expected to cease. nj roof repair . Precious metals are anticipated to continue to appreciate and hold their own worth. Hedgers have realized that this is a very strong tool against currency on the down slide, and with so many sovereign countries in large debt investors are looking into safer opportunities as in silver coins. This is getting reflected in many of them buying gold, silver bars, silver coins and even finished jewelry.

Due to countries printing paper money to get over their debt, silver coin prices have increased, also noting that this is no longer backed by gold or silver reserves. There is a bit of skepticism that this money is as good as no money and may not stand the test of time as more debt gets piled on. One could say that the everyone will eventually go back to using standard values, and this is only in precious metals such as silver coins and gold, and this allows them to continue to appreciate.

One other reason for the increase in silver coin prices is continued inflation. With inflation booming, for situations such as the Middle East tension, you are not receiving the same actual value for your dollar that you may have a year or so ago. People are beginning to look into investing in American and Canadian silver coins as tangible assets as a way to secure a little nest-egg, especially with the terrible situation of unemployment plaguing many.

When you seriously think about things, as thing are now, silver coin values as well as silver coin prices may go up much higher then you would expect making this a great time to begin collecting them.

Start on your journey into this extraordinary investment or hobby prospect today, silver coin prices are sure to continue to sustain.

After Lincoln Cents, the most popular bullion coin among numismatists in the United States of America is the Morgan Dollar. This coin has a rich history, beginning from the year of its release in 1878. Part of its colorful and rich history started out with morgan silver dollar design.

During the 1870s, the price of silver dropped a lot. The US government decided to produce bullion coins made out of this metal with the intention of increasing its market price. The government’s key purpose was to help the mining industry and the numerous miners. The mines still had ample sources of this metal. The production of Morgan Dollar started in 1878.

George T. Morgan created the design in 1877. He was appointed as Assistant Engraver for the US Mint in Philadelphia. Since he came from England to the United States of America, he did not know much about the bald eagle. From the eighteenth century onwards, the bald eagle became an emblem for the United States of America. George decided to work on a picture of a bald eagle and Lady Liberty for the look of a new silver coin.

He pursued a course to gain knowledge about the bald eagle. Then he decided to put a full bald eagle picture on the reverse side of the coin. A full head image of Lady Liberty was chosen for the front of the coin. portal website . He looked around a lot for the right model to get a face for the Lady Liberty. He then chose a school teacher Anna Williams for it. The design created by George T. Morgan was approved and thus began the minting of bullion coins in 1878.

The production of Morgan Dollar coins were carried intermittently until 1921. The coins that were produced in 1895 were the considered the most prestigious of all the coins by the numismatists. Due to the different dyes used during production, all the bullion coins do not have same markings on them.

The coin’s market value is often different from the face value it has. The reason for this is that the market value of the coin varies with the price of silver. The Morgan Silver coin consists of 90% silver along with 10% of other metal components like copper. During 1878 and the following years, when the coins were initially released, the coins did not find that much of a demand. But today, these coins are highly in demand.

The reason for the lack of demand during the initial years was the image of the bald eagle which was present on the reverse side of the coin seemed to have been starved of food and hence didn’t attract buyers of those days. But after a few controversies in 1960s and the following years, the coin became very famous.

The Morgan Dollar is very much sought after by the collectors in U.S.A and takes the second place, next to Lincoln cents among the coin collectibles. The fame it achieved today can be attributed to its rich history of the coin which started with its design.

1900SilverDollar.com provides information and a collection of morgan silver dollars for sale.
