When it comes down to it there are really two types of coin that exist in this country. There is the coin that is legal tender (the ones we use every day) and the coin that is worthy of being collected.

Many people throughout the UK look out for a coin or two to add to their collection, and there are plenty that fit the bill. From the most recent example of the newly designed coinage that has found its way into the pockets of the nation, to the historic type of coin that dates from many years ago, there is a lot for the avid coin collector to consider.

As far as UK coin collecting is concerned, there has always been a strong association with royalty on every coin that has been released over the years. This is one of the main reasons why collectors enjoy what they do – it provides a distinct link with history in more than one way in the UK.

Even today there is the occasional find that dates from many years ago. A good example is the silver coin from 211 BC that surfaced in Leicestershire in the year 2000. Alongside these rare finds the history of coin collecting covers a lot of other ground as well.

For example a notable period in British history was the abolition of pre-decimal currency in 1971. As soon as the new currency came in, every previous coin ceased to be legal tender. For some people this provided them with an opportunity to save some for posterity. One notable feature of the new coinage was the words ‘new pence’ that appeared on them. After ten years this was deemed to be no longer necessary to distinguish old from new, and so the message disappeared.

If we bring things right up to date we can find a whole range of coinage that is produced specifically for collecting purposes. This is in direct contrast to the way things used to be. For instance when decimalisation came in there was no push to make the old coinage into sets that could be preserved.

Now though you can purchase a specific commemorative coin or a complete presentation set of many different kinds. One example is the sovereign, which is available as a quarter, half or full sovereign coin. These are indicative of the fact that many of today’s collectable sets are issued in limited numbers.

So if you want to start a coin collection you have two choices. You can either look for individual coins yourself to try and find rare ones, or you can buy complete sets from dealers or other venues. But either way you will be able to continue the chapter of coin collecting in the UK that looks set to continue for a long time to come yet.

Most of the expert coin collectors advise that every “newbie” in coin collecting should buy a book before he buys a coin. Engaging in this activity is not merely a “finder’s keepers” type of game. The argument of this concept is based on the premise that coin collecting is not an ordinary activity where people can just grab any kind of coin that they see. It is important to know the basics of coin collecting to appropriately categorize the kinds of coins that are fit for compilation.

Not all coins are worth collecting, and there are coins that some people may not consider worthy are actually rare and valuable. None of these things would be disclosed to a coin collector if not for the information gained from coin collecting books.

For those who wish to buy books but do not know what to look for, here is a list of the things that needs to be considered when buying:

1. It must give the historical account of the coins

When buying coin collecting books, look for those that will give you a historical perspective of the kind of coin that you wish to collect. For instance, if you are going to collect U.S. coins, buy a book that will tell the history of the U.S. coins.

2. It must give you practical guidelines in “grading” coins

It is necessary for every coin collector to have a book that provides information about the proper skills needed when “grading” coins. Grading is such an important skill that every coin collector must learn the skill if they wish to continue collecting coins and be successful doing so.

3. It must give you information about coins in a broad perspective

Coin collecting books that talk about the different kinds of coins in the world is a “must-have”. These are especially helpful to those who do not have any specific country in mind.

Books have always been man’s greatest companion as history unfolds. Coin collecting books are worth more than just being the collector’s friend – these books are also considered treasures in their own form.

Coin collectors from every corner of the globe have, at one time or another, come across a certain coin and wonder whether what they have in their possession is something of enormous value or just a piece of junk. It is important that, as a coin collector, you learn about the key factors that determine, or at least influence, coins value in order to be guided in your quest to find treasures of yore. There’s more to a coin than its face value, and of course, just because a coin does not carry significant monetary value does not mean you should not covet it to form part of your precious coin collection.

There are basically five factors that determine or influence the value of a particular coin. These primary factors are the coin’s rarity or scarcity these days, its bullion value, the demand for it among collectors today, its grade or condition, and its quality. Keep reading to find more about each of these primary factors and be enlightened about coin value estimation.

Obviously, coins value is greatly factored out by its rarity or scarcity – this is the cause of great joy and pride in a coin collector. The general rule is, the more rare a coin, the higher its value. There are some coin collectors that continue to be misled by what rarity or scarcity means. The age of a coin or when it was minted and distributed have nothing to do with its rarity or scarcity. If there are only a few, maybe even just one or two, coins around like the one you have in your hands (today, not during the period of its circulation), then your coin is no doubt rare or scarce and definitely priceless.

The bullion value of a coin is determined by the value of the precious metal it contains. In general, gold coins, silver coins, or platinum coins do not sell at a price below their melt value. A coin expert can help you with this.
If many coin collectors want the coin in your possession, then you can count on your coin to have high value. Coins value is influenced greatly by the demand or clamor for such coins.

Rarity or scarcity and demand are independent factors. This means that, while a coin may be rare, not many coin collectors are sure to prefer it over other coins that are relatively plentiful. For example, more coin collectors look out for early twentieth-century mercury dimes than other dimes from other periods. A dime from the eighteenth century, while rarer, thus has less demand. The total value of a coin will depend on all the factors taken into consideration, not just one or two of them; rarity or scarcity, demand, and the rest of the factors will be weighed together to get or estimate one coins value. However, some coin collectors have observed that coins in greater demand, while not so rare, value more than their rare counterparts.

Some coin collector have this notion that if a coin from centuries past were to be found, it has to be in bad shape in order to spark authenticity and command greater value.
