Sacagawea dollars were developed for general circulation by the United States Mint. These coins were first released to the public in 2000.

The goal of the dollar coin was to replace the paper dollar bill within circulation. The well known facts state that coins last much longer in circulation due to their durability. Over time, the higher cost of coins is paid for by the lower replacement costs. The government could conceivably save money if the circulation of dollar coins gained widespread acceptance. Usually attributed to the continued presence of paper dollars in circulation, the coins never caught on.

The face design of the coin series is that of the Shoshone woman, Sacagawea, with her infant son on her back. She was the wife of a French trapper, Toussaint Charbonneau. Together they had a son named Jean-Baptiste. The entire family would accompany the explorers Meriwether Lewis and William Clark on their expedition to the pacific coast commissioned by President Jefferson. The family was picked up in the spring of 1805. For the next year and a half, they traveled up the Missouri River, over the Rockies, and to the Pacific Coast, then back. The Charbonneau family settled in South Dakota at the end of the journey in August 1806.

The portrait on on the obverse of the coin is actually based on a teenage Shoshone woman who served as a model. win free gift cards . There are no known portraits of the real historical figure, so designer Glenna Goodacre chose this approach. Before the final selection of this design, many other concepts and renditions were considered. Goodacre’s depiction of Sacagawea and child was the popular favorite amongst the available choices. The reverse design was by Thomas D. Rodgers.

After nine years of mintage, the format of the Sacagawea Dollar was changed. Instead of the image of the eagle on the reverse, a different design was created annually to celebrate the contributions of Native Americans towards the development of the United States. The original obverse portrait did remain in place. For 2009, the design featured the Three Sisters method of planting. For 2010, it featured a representation of the Iroquois Confederacy. Most recently, the Wampanoag Treaty was shown with an image of the hands of the Massasoit and Governor John Carver exchanging the peace pipe. Since the start of the rotating reverse designs, mintage levels have been higher.

The Sacagawea Dollars are a favorite of modern coin collectors. The latest release is the 2011 Sacagawea Dollar depicting the Wampanoag Treaty of 1621.

Coin collecting has been a much loved hobby for boys and girls and adults alike since coins came into circulation. While historically coin hording would have been undertaken for financial gain, collecting coins as artefacts developed only later. The world’s very first coin collector, by modern standards, is believed to be the Italian poet Petrarch who, in the fourteenth century, began collecting ancient coins.

Nowadays, from rare treasures such as ancient Greek and Roman coins to currency of the Middle Ages and modern production, coin collecting sparks a fascination among historians and coin fanatics the world over. While many of the world’s finest examples of coins can only be viewed in museums, for collectors, the value of a coin can be far simpler, with trading values rising significantly between competitive collectors.

Typically, a coin’s face value is based on a number of select criteria, specifically its condition, age, rarity, significance, whether there are any errors on it and its general quality of design. For most collectors, particularly emphatic ones, rather than gather coins at random, they will seek out coins from a certain year, country, or series. Some collectors will even only look for coins with defects in them.

You can have your coin collection valued by experts in coinage, who will judge the condition of your coins on a scale radiating from poor to uncirculated, in other words in mint condition and showing no signs of circulation.

Many coinage experts would agree that the best way to begin a coin collection is to buy a coin and currency collection reference book, which will enable you to catalogue your finds cohesively. You could find that joining a coin collection club also improves your chances of finding out more, not just about your interest from like minded people, but about the best places to find and buy the specific collection themes you’re interested in.

Finding a trustworthy coin dealer from whom you can seek advice is also a good idea if you’re thinking of starting a coin collection. As an expert, your coin dealer could inform you when specific or rare coins become available to buy, or from where you might find out more about your individual interest.

For many coin enthusiasts, amassing a stack of coins is easy, but sourcing and enhancing your collection with rarities and coins of genuine interest can take a lifetime. Landyachtz longboard . Beth Chapman . Philips TVs . With limited release anniversary and remembrance coins printed annually, you could collect coins for all of your days, passing on a collection worthy of a family heirloom.

Rare Coins Available For The Coin Collector

All coin collectors enjoy searching for rare coins to add to their collection, and the rarer they are, the more valuable they become.

A List Of Rare Coins

Gold coins are extremely rare †they were in circulation till 1933, so they can fetch a very high value at an auction. Gold is always worth investing in as the value is on the upward trend †it never goes down.

The Liberty Seated Dollar which was produced in the 19th century is something a coin collector would like to acquire as it is a rare find.

Another coin that is worth keeping is the 20c coins which came out from 1875-1878 They resemble a quarter and today’s value is extremely low.

From 1892-1915, the Barber half dollars were minted, but collectors find it difficult to come across any of these coins that are in very good shape.

The One Standing Liberty Quarter minted in 1917 is a coin that a collector would like to own, but the design showed the breast of Ms.Liberty, and it caused a controversy so the circulation was stopped †it had only been around for a year.

In the 20th century there were Mercury dimes which were sold for $50/- each.

Another coin of great beauty is The Walking Liberty Half Dollar. This had a four year circulation and is one of the rarest coins.

Coming to the Texas Commemorative Half Dollar – this is also extremely rare and very difficult to find as there are only 60 †80% around.

One of the most expensive coins is the $20/- Saint Gauders. This was auctioned for 8 million dollars. Comcast Specials . It has a fabulous design and its value has remained intact even during the bear years in the eighties.

It is extremely difficult to get rare coins and the coin collector needs to spend a great deal of time on research by reading magazines or going on the Web for information. He can also go to auctions or join clubs where members may be willing to exchange or sell coins. After the research, he will need to examine the coins for authenticity and check that the quality is good and the price he is paying is worth the item he is buying. A great deal of his time and expense will be spent on finding the right coin, especially if it is a very rare one. If he has the money to invest in this hobby, it is worth all the time and effort if he can get the rarest of coins and add it to his collection, because he knows that in the long run his coins will be worth a small fortune.
