I think most people start out as collectors and then become numismatist. Although some people start out as hoarders then become collectors then become numismatist.I started as a collector when I was 9 and my parents gave me a coin collecting starter kit for Christmas. All those Whitman albums with holes in them for each coin, for each date and mint mark for all of the then current series.
It was fun and I continued off and on for the next 30 years. Then about 10 years ago I started devoting more time to my collection and becoming more knowledgeable about the hobby in general. So now I consider myself a numismatist in training.
Going to coin shows, joining a local coin club and joining the ANA have all added to my knowledge and fun.
