Anyone who has been associated with a military organization is familiar with the existence of a nearly separate culture of existence among the members. Perhaps this is born of the many challenges and difficulties shared by team members enhanced by the sobering reality of military units and their purpose. In keeping with their shared exclusivity, there is an event unique to military members; military challenge coins.

Military Esprit De Corps is famous, and it is important not just for the wellness of the unit during their off duty times. Unit cohesion has been a documented factor of troop performance since the sixth century before the birth of Christ. In early military battles, flags were used as a means of identifying which troops belonged to whom, and represented the loyalties of the disparate soldiers in the force.

A simple metal orb, carefully inscribed with the images representing the proud tradition o f a unit, has emerged as a new and increasingly popular way of demonstrating membership. Depending on the unit, some of these coins can be exceedingly difficult to earn, and their rarity is yet another of the reasons they are coveted. Increasingly, however, unit coins are being modified to acknowledge specific internal organizational associations, special qualifications, even participation in named operations or campaigns.

As a member of the armed forces continues on their career path, they will move from base to base and organization to organization with a sometimes dizzying rapidity. In between what is known as permanent stations, soldiers are frequently assigned temporarily to units in the field, or field units are stood up to accommodate specific needs, then retired when the need is gone. Even in forward operating locations it is not unusual to find the appearance the emblem distinctively reminding the soldier of his time there.

When they began to catch on and become poplar, they were almost exclusively minted for the organization, a new common rallying standard for inter unit rivalries. As they became more common and popular, they began to appear in other formats. Some were presented for major, joint staff sanctioned military exercises, for special service at a command level, and others for excellence demonstrated during inspections.

Not surprisingly, as the popularity of this practice of distributing them has blossomed, so too has the lore of the orb, the often unwritten rules that the bearers are nonetheless responsible for understanding and abiding by. Like the somewhat ridiculous requirements dreamed up for entry into fraternities, challenges have specific tenets. First each individual should be carrying the coin that bears the images of his current unit, not base x, the previous station.

When a coin is passed from the issuing authority to the new recipient it is usually accompanied with something of a ceremony, though informal. Best Video Editing Software . A commander might present the coin to a unit member during an award ceremony. The protocol has the recipient at attention, receiving the accolades from the commander.

When the commander is finished delineating the heroics of the recipient, the recipient faces the commander, salutes, and the two shake hands. The coin is in the shaking hand and possession of the coin is transferred. It is not as simple as one might imagine, and there is a very real possibility of dropping it, embarrassing both. Possibly to ensure great care is taken to avoid this, there is a consequence to dropping military challenge coins, you have to buy a round of drinks.

The year 1982 was a great year for numismatics. It marked the start of the program for Modern Commemorative Coins in the States. The first was minted to celebrate the 250th birthday of Pres. George Washington, one of America’s most adored Presidents. These coins were in half dollars. Since that year, modern commemorative coins were minted to give honor to significant US people, occasions, places and institutions.

The recognition of modern commemorative coins is rising, although it fluctuates with the subject matter. Sales are normally high when the subject or theme is famous, oftentimes reaching the optimum mintage granted by the government. The coins are generally discounted on its first couple of weeks of release, but will be sold on its standard price in the remaining sales period which lasts only for a certain year or for several months. In the past, popular coins such as the 2006 Benjamin Franklin Commemorative and the 2001 American Buffalo Commemorative were sold out very quickly.

Over the ensuing years, five different measurements of these coins were minted. The first were half-dollar silver commemorative coins with 90% composition; and next $1 of the same specifications were also launched. Later on, $10 gold coins were released, 90% of its composition was gold, weighing .4837 ounces. Five dollar gold modern commemorative coins were also created at 90% gold, .2418 ounces. Clad half dollars were released, finally, composing nickel 8% and copper 92%.

Silver commemorative coins and other commemorative coins can be used as legal tender but they were not really for the purpose of general circulation. It is being sold to the public by the US Mint at prices inclusive of surcharges which are apportioned for some programs. They are issued by the US Mint with the necessary certification from the US Congress.

Two programs connected to commemorative coins are authorized every year; some showcasing $5 silver coins, gold dollars and clad half dollars. For 2010, the feature will be that of the Boy Scouts Centennial and the American Veteran Disabled for Life.

An extensive range of silver commemorative coins, modern commemorative coins and other fascinating coins are highlighted at currencyvault.com. Look at the site and take your pick.

Coin collecting is a hobby that will never go out of style. One of the things I fondly recall doing with my pa when I was young was looking through his collection of favorite coins that he kept in a metal tobacco tin. He would show me each coin and tell me the story behind it.

My Dad particularly cherished his silver half dollars that pictured John F. Kennedy especially as he had once campaigned for him when he was in college. Dad’s coins were all special to him for a variety of reasons. I don’t know whether the collection was worth an awful lot, but I still remember the pleasure he took in those coins.

In 2006 the United States Mint has created a highly singular coin, the 2006 American Gold Buffalo. The Gold Buffalo is redolent of the buffalo nickel that was originally minted in 1913 and is highly cherished by today’s collectors. If you are looking to invest in coins, the gold buffalo is possibly the one to attain. Even if you are not a coin collector, the gold buffalo is a great investment.

The beautiful gold buffalo is unique in part because it is the first 24-karat gold coin ever to be minted in the US. The front side shows a buffalo in full profile. The reverse side shows an Indian’s head in profile. The denomination, $50, is imprinted on the front. Also imprinted are the weight of the coin, 1 ounce, and its quality, .9999 fine.

The gold buffalo coins are not in circulation, but they are available online and are ready to be shipped. Any collector would be pleased to own a gold buffalo. With its sentimental nod to the famous 1913 buffalo nickel and its distinction of being the only U.S.-minted gold coin in history, the gold buffalo represents a valuable addition to any collection.

Steve Collins is an author and coin collector. He is very fond of the Gold Buffalo he prizes his collection of gold buffalo coins This article, Coin Collecting Is A Hobby That Will Never Go Out Of Fashion has free reprint rights.
